We pulled out around lunchtime on the Saturday before revival started at in Prentiss, MS, but we had barely merged on to the interstate when I noticed rubber and plastic debris bouncing across the asphalt. Benjy slowed to a crawl and pulled off at the next exit which, thankfully, had a truck stop with a large parking lot.

As you can see the white plastic fender well, was damaged by the shredding of the tire. Fortunately, we have a replacement for that! It was given to us by the previous owner when we bought the camper … God’s provision in advance! Benjy replaced the shredded tire with the spare, and we headed back to Picayune to buy a new spare … no way do we want to leave home without one of those. We still made it to Lake Jeff Davis and got settled in before dark, so all is well that ends well.

Benjy, McKenzie, and the youth of Oak Grove gathered around the piano to sing one night during
the revival. It was so encouraging to see young people excited to sing.
Benjy says this is how he learned to sing in church.

McKenzie and I had a relaxing week on the lake, but it was a very full week for Benjy, driving 90 miles to work every morning and 90 miles back to Prentiss for church every evening. That’s why we camped near the church … so he wouldn’t have to drive so far when he was tired at night. I’m not complaining. I’m just giving you a glimpse of the details involved in the life of a part-time evangelist. We love what we do, and we feel that God has blessed us with the opportunities He has given us to serve. And He has blessed us with some wonderfully inspirational people along the way, too. Rose, the lady playing the piano, is one of them. She has a contagious enthusiasm! She loves those young people, encourages them to participate in church activities, and even plays basketball with them … way to go Rose!

Pastor and his wife, Mary Nell, are two more inspirational people God has blessed us to know. They are such humble servant-leaders. We always enjoy watching them minister so lovingly to their congregation. They set a very good example for all husband and wife ministry teams to follow. We consider them a treasure among our partners in ministry.

Here’s another inspirational person we’ve met. If I’m not mistaken, the man (standing) said he is 94 years old. I met him just before we went back into the sanctuary for the after-lunch service. He and his wife had heard that Bro. Barber (sitting) would be preaching, and he was eager to visit with him. The man had worked on a Hurricane Katrina recovery team with Bro. Barber in 2005. Bro. Barber told me that the man was putting on shingles with the rest of the men and working circles around most of them!

The revival team: Benjy, Pastor George, and Bro. . These men worked so well together … professional, loving, Spirit-led, proclaimers of the Truth. This was our first time to meet Bro. Barber. I loved his style of preaching … very deep truths made understandable to common people. He’s a teaching preacher, and I think that is so important because Scripture warns us that God’s people are destroyed because of a lack of knowledge. That wouldn’t happen if we had more men sharing the Word like Bro. Barber did this week.

One Response to “Off To a Rough Start”

Sometimes I wonder why events like that happen and then I have to repent when the tire blows at a convenient spot!

We never know this side of Heaven what He may have protected us from if we kept going down the road without that stop.
